About Us

Common Sense Seeds is our family-run seed company built on a passion for growing tomatoes. We grow and save seed from all of the tomato varieties we offer. Our focus is growing tomatoes that thrive in a short growing season (Zone 4) and varieties that are not widely available in North America. We have tracked down hard-to-find varieties from all over the world, and have some great stories to tell. Not only are we seedsavers, but we are seed historians too. When you know the story of the seed, you know the potential of the plant.

We also love other veggies! We grow and save seed from all of the Physalis varieties we offer (Cape Gooseberry, Ground Cherry & Tomatillos) and a few pepper and herb varieties. And we have partnered with experienced Canadian seed suppliers to be able to offer a few of our other favourite veggies. All of the seeds we offer are open-pollinated. We have over 100 different varieties of seeds available. We focus on varieties that do well for home gardeners.

Our goal is to help home gardeners grow good food to scale. In other words, to help you grow as much food as you have the space and time for.

Why is our name Common Sense Seeds?

It just makes sense to grow a few of your own veggies. And to grow a few flowers for the pollinators. And a few tomatoes for the squirrels. And to have a few extra zucchini to share with your neighbours. It just makes sense to teach our children where a carrot comes from. And what a fresh cucumber tastes like. And to watch in awe as that teeny, weeny seed you planted grows to become a beautiful, nourishing plant.

Thank you for stopping by!

Our Motto

Sow Seeds. Plant Joy. Eat Well.

Land Acknowledgement

We are honoured to sow seeds and grow harvests on lands in Southern Alberta, specifically at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers in Calgary, a traditional meeting place of Indigenous peoples. We appreciate and acknowledge we are sowing seeds and growing harvests on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Pikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the historic Northwest Metis Nation and to the Otipemisiwak Metis Government, Metis Nation Battle River Territory (Nose Hill Metis District 5 and Elbow Metis District 6).

Seed Acknowledgement

Many of the seeds we grow were originally developed and stewarded by Indigenous peoples of North America, as well as Central and South America. Not only are we grateful to be able to grow these Indigenous seeds, and marvel at the skill of the original Indigenous seed keepers who developed these hardy, flavourful, productive and beautiful varieties, but at the same time we acknowledge that through colonization and land removal many of the original Indigenous seed keepers and growers were removed from their lands and separated from their seeds. We promise to be allies in the Reconciliation process, and start that process by acknowledging these harms; promising to treat the land, soil and seeds with care and respect; and participating in the seed Rematriation process.
