A rare variety from an ancient part of the world.
Afghanistan Cherry is an easy, early, productive tomato that is about 4 feet tall. Most of the tomatoes are round, but a few are a lovely scalloped/ribbed shaped and look like mini-beefsteak tomatoes. Who doesn’t need a lot of cherry tomatoes?
This tangy red cherry tomato was donated to the Seed Savers Exchange (USA) in 1977 without any accompanying information other than its name (Afghanistan). Going out on a limb here, we guess it’s from its namesake country.
It might be from the USDA’s collection of tomatoes from Afghanistan that were donated by the ‘Afghan Department of Agriculture’ in 1952 — one of the unnamed accessions (PI 200880) is a red cherry tomato that looks like this one.
How to Plant: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant seed 5mm (¼ inch) deep. Keep moist. When true leaves appear, transplant to a larger container if needed. Transplant outside after the danger of frost has passed/later spring.
