A great tasting tomato that thrives in low-irrigation conditions.
Dirty Girl Tomato is named after ‘Dirty Girl Farm’ in Santa Cruz, California where farmer Joe Schirmer discovered this tomato in a grow-out of the famous hybrid tomato ‘Early Girl’.
His grow-outs of Early Girl revealed a potato leaf plant that thrived in low irrigation conditions.
After 13 years of growing Dirty Girl in low irrigation conditions (and selling the tomatoes at the local farmers market) Joe shared seeds of this now stabilized, open-pollinated variety with other growers.
We can confirm that this tomato does well in low-irrigation conditions. We planted Dirty Girl in a south facing garden patch that gets a lot of heat and limited water. Dirty Girl thrived despite these challenges.
The saladette size tomatoes (50g to 65g) have very good flavour – sweet and tangy. They also have very good firm texture and last off the vine a long time.
How to Plant: Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seed 5mm (¼ inch) deep. Transplant after the danger of frost has passed/later spring.
Thank you to Nancy McCormack for sharing seeds with us.
