Palmira’s tomato is renowned for its great taste – meaty, juicy with rich tomato flavour — and high yields.

This vigorous tomato was one of our best producers — from mid-season on up until the first frost. The classic red fruits are mostly round and blemish free. Plants can grow tall – up to 6 ft.

Originally introduced to the seed trade by a seed saver in Australia (‘Skip’) who acquired seeds from Palmira at a flea market in Australia (‘a local trash and treasure market’). ‘Skip’s’ history of Palmira’s tomato is reported on Tatiana’s Tomatobase:

“I secured this most unusual large, red beefsteak tomato from a charming Italian lady at our local trash and treasure market. She told me that this tomato originated in northern Italy. That was all she could tell me, and being called Palmira I have named it after her. The fruits are not sweet, more like ‘Ray’s Greek’ (which I have also put into circulation) that has proved so popular with all who have grown it. Another excellent heirloom tomato.”

We will also add this tasty Italian heirloom does very well in short season gardens.

How to Plant: Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seed 5mm (¼ inch) deep. Transplant after the danger of frost has passed/later spring.
