At first glance, Yucatan Red seems like a regular red tomato. Until you bite into it — then its excellent taste — fruity with tangy undertones, hits you. It is a meaty tomato with great texture and looks like a ‘Bola Macizo’-type tomato from Mexico. Bola Macizo tomatoes are renowned for their great taste. Tatiana’s Tomatobase mentions there are red and pink varieties of ‘Bola Macizo’ — this is likely the red variety.
Yucatan Red has medium-sized round and scalloped/ribbed red fruits ranging in size from 30g to 90g (1oz to 3oz).
Yucatan Red is 3 feet tall and needs a stake, but otherwise is easy to grow and productive.
It was first introduced to the seed trade in 2004 by the (now closed) Eastern Native Seed Exchange (Massachusetts). Our seedstock came from the Seed Savers Exchange.

How to Plant: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant seed 5mm (¼ inch) deep. Keep moist. When true leaves appear, transplant to a larger container if needed. Transplant outside after the danger of frost has passed/later spring.
