Dianthus barbatus
Sooty is a Sweet William type of Dianthus with stunning deep maroon, almost black flowers. Sooty’s foliage is also stunning – deep green when the plants are young and best described as “metallic mahogany” when the plants mature. Plants are 12 to 18 inches tall. An easy to care for, low maintenance plant.
Sooty is one of the fragrant Dianthus – but its fragrance is subtle.
Unlike our other Dianthus varieties which will flower in their first year – Sooty will not flower in its first year. In its first year, you will have to appreciate Sooty for its unique foliage – it will flower in its second year. But it is worth the wait. Sooty is Perennial down to Zone 3.
How to Plant: Start indoors early March/April. Press small seeds into soil and barely cover with soil. Keep soil moistened and place container in a warm place. A heat mat helps to keep soil warm. Once seedlings are up, place under lights/in a sunny place. Transplant outside after danger of frost is passed.
