Leafy Greens = ‘Powerhouse’ Foods. Cruciferous (e.g. Brassica, cabbage, kale) and leafy greens (e.g. romaine, looseleaf lettuce) are some of the most ‘Powerhouse’ foods you can eat according to a study by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA). They define ‘Powerhouse’ foods as foods that provide 10% or more of the daily value of 17 nutrients (i.e. potassium, fiber, protein, calcium, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, zinc, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K). Which foods are ‘Powerhouse’ foods? In fact, the Top 10 ‘Powerhouse’ foods are all cruciferous and leafy greens. From the study: “Nutrient density scores ranged from 10.47% to 122.68%… Items in cruciferous (watercress, Chinese cabbage, collard green, kale, arugula) and green leafy groups (chard, beet green, spinach, chicory, leaf lettuce, romaine) were concentrated in the top half of the distribution of scores.” What is the #1 ‘Powerhouse’ food?
